Eel seal.

New Zealand fur seal.

One evening when me, my older sister Grace, my younger sister Mia, and mum were on our way home from a bike ride (mum was running) along the waihopai river walking track, I was quite a bit ahead of the others, I was biking under the bridge when I caught a glimpse of some black thing do a dolphin dive in the water beside me.
It gave me such a fright (it was dark under the bridge), that I sped out from under the bridge as fast as I  could. When I was out from under the bridge I stopped to wait for the others to catch up. As soon as they came out from under the bridge, I told them I thought I saw an eel. I pointed out to where I last saw it, and suddenly it just popped out of the water! We followed it back under the bridge later figured it was a baby seal! Mum didn't know the number for DOC, we have friends who's dad works for DOC,
so mum tried to ring them, but mum said they'r not home. So in the end, we just had to leave it and go home because mum was getting cold, and it was getting dark.
A couple of days after that, we went down to the river to see if the the baby seal was still there. It was there, but there was a surprise further up the river, the seals mother was just up ahead so that meant that we never again needed to worry about the eel seal.
The cool thing about seals is that they actually play! They do things like twirls in the water, and lie on their back and flap their flippers around.

Seals might look quite friendly, but they can actually be quite viscious when they want to like this seal who has just caught lunch.
